Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s most remote and unspoiled wilderness, covering approximately 1,442 square kilometres in the rugged Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda. Nestled between the borders of South Sudan and Kenya, the park is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, vast open savannah, rugged mountain ranges, seasonal rivers, and rich cultural heritage. Its isolation has helped preserve its pristine beauty, making it one of Africa’s most authentic safari destinations.

The park is home to an exceptional diversity of wildlife, with more than 75 mammal species and over 470 bird species recorded within its boundaries. Kidepo is one of the few places in Uganda where visitors can encounter cheetahs, ostriches, bat eared foxes, and large herds of buffalo roaming freely across expansive plains. Combined with spectacular scenery and relatively few visitors, the park offers an exclusive safari experience unlike anywhere else in East Africa.

Game Drives

Wildlife

Kidepo Valley National Park supports one of Uganda’s richest concentrations of wildlife, with more than 75 mammal species inhabiting its diverse ecosystems. The park’s vast grasslands, rocky outcrops, and seasonal river valleys provide ideal habitats for many animals rarely seen elsewhere in Uganda.

Visitors have excellent opportunities to encounter elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, elands, hartebeests, waterbucks, oribis, reedbucks, bush duikers, bat eared foxes, jackals, spotted hyenas, and the world’s largest population of Burchell’s zebras in Uganda. The park is also one of the few places in the country where ostriches can be seen in the wild.

Narus Valley

Narus Valley is the park’s most popular wildlife viewing area and one of the best places for game drives. Permanent water sources attract large numbers of wildlife throughout the year, making animal sightings both frequent and rewarding.

Visitors commonly encounter elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and numerous antelope species within the valley. Its open grasslands also provide excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Best Time to Visit

Kidepo Valley National Park is a year round safari destination, with each season offering a unique experience. The dry months from September to March are the most popular for game viewing, as wildlife gathers around permanent water sources and vegetation is less dense, making animals easier to spot.

The rainy seasons bring lush green landscapes, excellent bird watching opportunities, and fewer visitors. The park becomes especially scenic during this time, making it an ideal season for photographers and travellers looking for a quieter safari experience.

Getting There

Kidepo Valley National Park is located in Uganda’s northeastern Karamoja region, approximately 700 kilometres from Kampala. The journey by road takes about ten to twelve hours and passes through some of Uganda’s most scenic countryside, offering travellers an opportunity to experience the country’s changing landscapes and local communities.

For a faster journey, scheduled domestic flights operate from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Apoka Airstrip. The short transfer from the airstrip to the park allows visitors to begin their safari almost immediately after arrival.

Park Sectors

Kidepo Valley National Park is divided into two main wildlife areas, each offering a unique safari experience. Narus Valley is the most popular for game drives because its permanent water sources attract wildlife throughout the year, making animal sightings frequent and rewarding.

Kidepo Valley offers a completely different landscape characterised by seasonal riverbeds, Borassus palm trees, and vast open plains stretching towards the South Sudan border. Its remote setting provides spectacular scenery and a true wilderness experience.

What to Pack

Comfortable safari clothing in neutral colours is recommended for exploring the park. Visitors should also pack sturdy walking shoes, a wide brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, binoculars, and a reusable water bottle for outdoor activities.

A light jacket is useful for early morning game drives and evenings, while a camera with extra batteries or memory cards is essential for capturing the park’s incredible wildlife and dramatic landscapes.

Safari Tips

Plan to spend at least two or three days in Kidepo to fully enjoy its wildlife, scenery, and cultural experiences. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for game drives, as wildlife is generally more active during the cooler hours of the day.

Because of the park’s remote location, it is advisable to book accommodation, domestic flights, and park activities well in advance, particularly during the peak safari seasons. Travelling with an experienced guide will also enhance your wildlife viewing experience and help you discover the park’s hidden gems.
