Semuliki National Park is one of Uganda’s most unique protected areas, tucked away in the western Albertine Rift Valley at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains. Covering approximately 220 square kilometres, the park protects the eastern extension of the ancient Ituri Forest, one of Africa’s oldest tropical rainforests and part of the vast Congo Basin ecosystem. When to Visit Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park can be visited throughout the year, although the dry seasons from June to August and December to February are generally the best times to explore the rainforest. During these months, the forest trails are less muddy, making it easier to enjoy guided nature walks, bird watching, and visits to the Sempaya Hot Springs. Wildlife is also more active along the trails, providing better opportunities for photography and forest exploration.

The rainy seasons from March to May and September to November bring lush green vegetation, flowing streams, and excellent bird watching as both resident and migratory species become more active. While some trails may be slippery, the rainforest is at its most vibrant, making it an ideal time for visitors who enjoy nature and scenic landscapes.

Getting to Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park is located in Bundibugyo District in western Uganda, approximately 360 kilometres from Kampala. The journey by road takes about six to seven hours via Fort Portal before descending through the scenic escarpment into the Semuliki Valley. Along the way, travellers enjoy spectacular views of the Rwenzori Mountains, crater lakes, and the surrounding countryside.

The park is commonly included in western Uganda safari itineraries together with Kibale National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Its location also makes it an excellent destination for travellers exploring the Albertine Rift region.

Entrance Fees at Semuliki National Park

All visitors entering Semuliki National Park are required to pay an entrance fee set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Different rates apply to East African citizens, foreign residents, and international visitors, while separate fees are charged for activities such as guided nature walks, bird watching, cultural experiences, and ranger services.

Since entrance fees are reviewed from time to time, visitors are encouraged to confirm the latest rates before travelling.
