The Ancient Volcanic Wonders of Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is one of the oldest extinct volcanoes in East Africa, believed to have erupted more than 24 million years ago. When to Visit Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park can be visited throughout the year, with each season offering a unique experience. The dry months from June to August and December to March are the most popular for trekking because the trails are generally less slippery and visibility is often clearer, making it easier to enjoy the mountain scenery and reach the higher elevations. These months are also ideal for exploring caves, waterfalls, and the park’s extensive network of hiking trails.

The rainy seasons transform the mountain into a lush green paradise with flowing waterfalls, vibrant vegetation, and excellent bird watching opportunities. Although some trails become muddy, this is a rewarding time for photography and nature lovers who want to experience Mount Elgon at its most beautiful.

Getting to Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park is located in eastern Uganda near Mbale, approximately 235 kilometres from Kampala. The journey by road takes about four to five hours via Jinja and Mbale, offering beautiful views of rolling hills, farmland, and rural communities along the way. The park is easily accessible and can be included in both short and extended Uganda safari itineraries.

Visitors can access the park through different entry points depending on their planned activities. The Sasa Gate near Budadiri is the main starting point for summit treks, the Kapkwai Exploration Centre is ideal for nature walks and bird watching, while the Sipi area provides convenient access for visitors combining the park with Sipi Falls and nearby coffee tours.

Where to Stay at Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park offers accommodation for every type of traveller, ranging from luxury lodges and boutique safari retreats to comfortable mid range hotels, guesthouses, and budget camps. Most properties are located around Sipi Falls, Kapchorwa, Mbale, and Budadiri, providing easy access to the park’s main attractions and trekking routes.

Visitors undertaking multi day mountain expeditions spend their nights in designated mountain camps along the hiking trails, while those exploring the lower slopes can enjoy comfortable lodges with spectacular views of waterfalls, valleys, coffee plantations, and the surrounding mountain landscape.

Entrance Fees at Mount Elgon National Park

All visitors are required to pay an entrance fee before accessing Mount Elgon National Park. The Uganda Wildlife Authority sets different rates for East African citizens, foreign residents, and international visitors. Additional fees apply for activities such as mountain trekking, guided nature walks, camping, cave exploration, and the services of guides and porters.

As entrance fees are reviewed periodically, it is advisable to confirm the latest rates before travelling. Visitors planning to climb Wagagai Peak or join guided activities should also make reservations in advance, particularly during the peak trekking seasons, to ensure availability and a well organised adventure.
